Join our book club The Book Room for students and employees at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts and find out why Doctor Glas has been captivating new readers for over a 100 years!

The Book Room started as an idea to merge classic fiction and the artistic subjects within our faculty, and most of all – to bring us together, learning from each other through reading. This autumn we’re doing it again, first in English, then in Swedish. Together we will be reading Doctor Glas by Hjalmar Söderberg, first published in 1905. 

There’s a reason this novel still lives through various art forms and continues to make us question the definition of good and evil. Don’t miss the chance to read it! Enter Hjalmar Söderberg’s world of melancholy and get to know the intellectualized Dr. Tyko Gabriel Glas through his personal diary. The story takes place in Stockholm during the warmest summer months, when Glas’s morals take an unexpected turn in a profound longing for love and meaning.

Doctor Glas has been the subject of fascination for decades, leading to literary reinterpretations, theatre productions, and films. Like many other classics, it stirred quite the scandal when it first came out, and its impact on readers is still powerful.
