PhD defence | Iury Salustiano Trojaborg – Ancestral Dramaturgies

Ancestral Dramaturgies is a decolonial, practice-based methodology developed through my artistic and research engagement with migration, diaspora, ancestry, memory, belonging, and more-than-human relations. Rather than applying a pre-existing method, it emerged through iterative artistic experimentation, collective and pedagogical processes, and embodied forms of inquiry. The methodology understands dramaturgy as an epistemological and relational practice through which bodies, memories, histories, places, materials, and forms of knowledge can encounter one another. It is grounded in the principles of encruzilhada (crossroads), drawing on Luiz Rufino’s Pedagogy of Crossroads, and the spiral time, informed by Leda Maria Martins’ Performances of Spiral Time. Ancestral Dramaturgies proposes transferable principles rather than a universal method, offering ways of engaging ancestral and collective histories through situated, embodied, and regenerative artistic practice.

Biography

Iury Salustiano Trojaborg is a Queer, non-binary, Afro-diasporic interdisciplinary artist-researcher whose work explores the intersections of theatre and performance, migration, decoloniality, and social sustainability. For over ten years, Iury has been experimenting with listening as a practice for encountering other existences, histories, and temporalities. Her artistic and research practice is guided by a belief in the regenerative powers of Nature and the arts, and by a commitment to cultivating new relations between bodies, memories, places, ancestral relations, and forms of knowing.
