Welcome to an afternoon at Malmö Academy of Music dedicated entirely to one of modernism’s most influential works. Together with our special guests, Messiaen Quartet Copenhagen, we explore Arnold Schoenberg’s groundbreaking *Pierrot Lunaire* in a lecture concert culminating in a complete performance of the work.

Programme

15.00 – Introductory seminar with Professor Staffan Storm and the ensemble

We begin with an open discussion with the musicians, exploring the work, its challenges, and what the rehearsal process has looked like behind the scenes as they bring this complex score to life.

Followed by – Concert: Arnold Schoenberg – Pierrot Lunaire (1912)

An Expressionist melodrama in 21 parts that shook the musical world to its foundations. The work takes us deep into the central character’s nocturnal, feverish and at times macabre fantasies through the renowned vocal technique of Sprechstimme – a carefully notated form of speech-song that balances on the boundary between spoken drama and singing.
